I've visited many cemeteries around the world, and Montjuic's is definitively one of the most beautiful and monumental. Featuring gothic and neogothic, modern, romanic, Egyptian, neoclassic and other style-inspired graves, tombs and mausoleums, this is a place you must visit with lots of spare time to walk around. Take advantage of the free tours every first and third Sunday of the month, they are absolutely worth it.

An unusual cultural experience which exposes you to fascinating insights about the locals. The old cemetery on the southern side is dwarfed by the massive rectangular rock shelving systems used as family mausoleums. Self guided. Wonderful views of the city. Public bus access, drive and plenty of parking, or a long walk (we did the latter, taking in the dreary Olympic stadium and the okay castle en route).

Having visited many cemeteries around the world, Cementiri de Montjuïc is easily the most beautiful. Entrance to the cemetery is free but there is also a museum that can be visited for a nominal fee. Taking a car is recommended as the complex is VERY large and could probably even be considered its own village based on the number of “inhabitants.” There are several bus stops and directions within the park so you won’t get lost. There are many historic crypts and a seemingly endless sea of walls which are stacked with tombstones. The view from the top was beautiful and included the mountains, coastline and the port. I would recommend that you definitely take some time to walk around the historic tomb area (there are plenty of placards to indicate where they are so you can’t miss them) and enjoy the beautiful foliage that has been planted nearby. My friends and I spent over an hour driving through the cemetery and even stepped out of the car a few times to get a closer look at some of the interesting burials but still didn’t manage to see the whole place! There are guided tours and at the base of the complex there is a museum which includes a large collection of historic hearse vehicles. Overall, Cementiri de Montjuïc was very interesting and beautiful. If you are ever visiting Barcelona, definitely consider taking the time to drive through and enjoy the location and view that is offered by this cemetery.

I went to this place with a couple of my friends and took lots of pictures. This ancient cemetery is very fascinating. Classic and Gothic designs inspired the early monuments. There are also a few that were influenced by the Art Noveau movement. You can see this cemetery if you are driving down the freeway on your way to downtown Barcelona from the airport. The steep slopes of the hillside give Montjuïc its unique character. It's a great place to hike and explore.
